NAU MAI, HAERE MAI, WHAKATAU MAI - posted 12th February 2012 - Welcome back to all our students who have returned for another year of learning and development, and a very special welcome to all our new students and their families. On Friday the 10th February the college welcomed more than 30 new students to the school and it is a privilege to have these students and their families among us. As a school we want to work closely with all our parents/caregivers and I encourage you all to play an active role in the development of your child. This is a role that we must work on together.
CONGRATULATIONS - posted 12th February 2012 - We have to congratulate our community constable Mario Kake who has now been appointed as the new Iwi Liaison Officer for the Mid Far North. Unfortunately for the school this means Mario’s involvement with the kapa haka group will be reduced as he commits himself to the new role. The school wishes Mario every success with his new appointment.
CONTINUING WITH KAPA HAKA - posted 12th February 2012 - Fortunately for the college Robbie Whiu and whaea Maungaroa have been able to work with our students. This work paid off with our first powhiri where the school welcomed 30 new students and their families to our college on the 10th February 2012. Robbie and Maungaroa are an excellent addition to our school and bring a sense of pride and culture back to our school. As a school we look forward to the developments over the year as both Robbie and Maungaroa work alongside our students.
YR 7&8 STATIONERY LIST - posted 6th February 2012 - this is a new stationery list for our Junior students.
NEW ENTRANCE FOR SCHOOL REQUIRED - posted 5th February 2012 - Our school grounds are among the best in the country and we all take pride in their care and appearance. Our Head of Art Ms Gell recently painted our school entrance sign as it appeared to have been in serious need of a paint job. This is the main entrance to our school and as such it needs to reflect an initial message of pride. In the near future the school would like to have a rock/stone wall built at the main entrance approximately 1.8m high and 6m in length. On this wall will be the college name in brass letters. However, on approaching several companies for a quote this concept became unreachable as the cost ranged from $45,000 - $55,000, money the school obviously does not have. The school would still like to have a rock wall out the front of the school so if you are able to help out in any way through skills, advice or materials the school and effectively the entire community of Whangaroa would be very grateful. Please contact the school office if you are able to help.
WELCOME - posted 5th February 2012 - Welcome back to all our students who have returned for another year of learning and development, and a special welcome to all our new students and their families. On one hand it is always good to have a break from our daily work while on the other hand it is also just as good to get back in to the routines we enjoy so much.
2012 A NEW YEAR WITH NEW IDEAS - posted 30th January 2012 -2012 dawns with a series of new innovations for Whangaroa College. The most exciting has to be the introduction of home rooming our YR 7&8 students. This concept will reduce movement around the school by our junior students and this means more time spent in the classroom learning. Another concept is that of a focus day. This focus day will take place on Wednesdays and provide senior students the opportunity to pursue careers outside of the school through pathways, gateway and careers. This day will also allow opportunities for field trips, guest speakers and special cultural and sporting activities to take place without interfering with the normal running of the school. In 2011 the students and staff indicated that sports, field trips, guest speakers and a range of activities tended to interfere with student engagement and learning, so as a response the school will trial the focus day concept. If you would like any further information around the focus day please contact the school and ask to speak with the Principal.

This is an exciting development in our school and we are positive that Kapa Haka will once again become a feature in our college.
COMMUNITY MEETING – posted 2nd December – thank you to those who attended our School Community meeting held on the evening of the 1st December. A newsletter was sent home with all students on the 26th November inviting all parents and caregivers to contribute to the School Charter for 2012. This was an important meeting and I encourage all parents and caregivers to take every opportunity to attend these meetings. The meeting provided an excellent environment where teacher’s, parents and students worked together to identify meaningful strategies to ensure students received the best quality education available. It was also mentioned at the meeting that some students are not taking home the school newsletters and some homes also do not have access to the internet. As a result the school will be looking at the option of communicating with parents via text messaging. It is important that we explore all avenues of communication to keep our school community informed.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL - posted 29th November - In the past week I have read the academic data for our Year 7&8 students and the data highlighted concerns around numeracy and literacy. One concern that was more obvious than others is that students need more support with writing. This has prompted a response in the form of Unsupported Writing Samples (UWS). At the beginning of 2012 all students will be required to produce an unassisted written sample of work. This sample will be stored in the student’s file and the process will be completed again at the end of each semester. The samples will be analysed with an expectation that positive improvement has taken place. This programme will also complement our Reading Recovery Programme. Numeracy and literacy will continue to be reinforced across the curriculum with a genuine focus to improve reading, writing and mathematics skills and knowledge.
As the year draws to an end it is important that we all maintain the steady progress we have made over the past two terms. It is important that students continue to arrive at school in the correct uniform that is worn with pride, have the right equipment and are ready to engage in the learning opportunities available at school.
READING RECOVERY – posted 5th November 2011 – our Reading Recovery Program (RRP) is finally underway :o). Literacy is an integral element that all children need to be able to tackle academic pursuits with confidence. The HOD of English has been trained in running records and our first lots of students have completed their initial reading test. This program is going to flourish in 2012 and beyond with the extra support of volunteers from the community. These volunteers lend an ear to the program where students are able to read in a safe no pressure environment. This program will also provide the school with important raw data that will be collected at the beginning of the year through a range of test. The data will be used by the school to show the actual value added while students make their way through the college. Obviously we want to ensure we are adding value to students learning experiences and if the data identifies that we are not; then we need to revisit our teaching programs and ensure we improve our practice. NOTE: all volunteers who work in the school are police vetted. If you are interested in being a RRP volunteer or are able to help out with this initiative please contact the school office for more details.
NUMERACY COACHES – posted 5th November 2011 – Our next project is to enlist the assistance of Numeracy coaches as Numeracy is also a critical contributor for academic success. NOTE: all volunteers who work in the school are police vetted. If you are interested in being a Numeracy Coach or are able to help out with this initiative please contact the school office for more details.

Through FarNet a range of international languages will be available online at the discretion of the e-dean. Students who participate in Video Conferencing classes have to be highly self motivated. It is important that both the parent/caregiver and the student understand this process. Waka Ama - posted 25th September
Saturday 24th September was a great day for Waka Ama with over 120 people attending the open day. Everyone gave it a go from our kaumatua and kuia all the way through to the youngest paddler on the day aged 7. The open day was an attempt to bring waka ama back to the Whangaroa region and to also gauge interest in a waka ama club for Whangaroa. Waka ama is a great non contact sport and enjoyed by thousands of paddlers throughout Aotearoa. Having a waka ama club in Whangaroa will be a huge benefit for the local community and especially for the youth of Whangaroa. Whangaroa College aims to introduce waka ama as a sport in 2012. The day was made successful by the community policemen: Mario Kake, Richard Avery, Rob Cameron and Blue Light. If you would like any further information on waka ama please contact the school office or visit http://wakaama.co.nz/
