WAKA AMA - Unfortunately, our waka ama program is temporarily on hold due to the school not having a waka ama to train and develop our students with. The waka ama open day that was run by Whangaroa College in conjunction with our community police held in October was a huge success. The waka ama for that day were kindly loaned by the Te Tii waka ama club and we thank them very much for the use of their waka ama. The school is currently working through a process that will hopefully allow us to purchase a waka ama for the school. Our first plan is to obviously fundraise as much money as possible, but having such a small school this will take some time. However, the students and staff are committed and I know that in the near future Whangaroa College will be the proud owners of a waka ama. If you have any suggestions on how we can achieve our goal of owning a waka ama please contact the school office and ask to speak with the principal.

Waka Ama - posted 25th September
Saturday 24th September was a great day for Waka Ama with over 120 people attending the open day. Everyone gave it a go from our kaumatua and kuia all the way through to the youngest paddler on the day aged 7. The open day was an attempt to bring waka ama back to the Whangaroa region and to also gauge interest in a waka ama club for Whangaroa. Waka ama is a great non contact sport and enjoyed by thousands of paddlers throughout Aotearoa. Having a waka ama club in Whangaroa will be a huge benefit for the local community and especially for the youth of Whangaroa. Whangaroa College aims to introduce waka ama as a sport in 2012. The day was made successful by the community policemen: Mario Kake, Richard Avery, Rob Cameron and Blue Light. If you would like any further information on waka ama please contact the school office or visit http://wakaama.co.nz/
