Tyrone Rogers is Whangaroa College Dux for 2016 and won a $10,000 scholarship from Otago University. He will undertake  a Bachelor of Physical Education in which he wants to return home and help his community.

Manuka proves best bacteria fighter

It started with a spider bite that just wouldn't heal.

After hearing the bite was treated with a natural remedy, budding scientists Cheyenne Rush and Georgia Mills wanted to find out more.

Rush and Mills, Whangaroa College students, investigated whether manuka (tea tree) oil and a Kawakawa leaf extract, proved more effective at killing bacteria than Savlon and Betadine in a scientific experiment.

In 2015, a writer from National Geographic explored our little piece of paradise called Whangaroa. When the article appeared in the magazine, the senior English classes were given the opportunity to respond to the reporters findings.

E Tu Whanau 2016 Songwriting Competition

 

Congratulations to Te Rina Kahle & Fairy-Allen Rikihana for their song ‘Moving Forward’ which place 2nd in the recent E Tu Whanau 2016 Songwriting Competition.

Te Rina & Fairy have worked hard towards their song with a huge acknowledgement to Whaea Maruia for helping them with their vocals, I hope this win in the E Tu Whanau Competition will inspire and help to foster their love for music and performance.
